My Family Opposed Me Because of Our Different Beliefs

By Yixin, Spain

When my husband found out that I was reading God’s words, he said angrily, “You’re not to read that book. I’ve stored it away, and if you look at it again you’ll have to leave this house.”

Since I started reading the words God expressed in the last days, my husband and my son were always trying to stop me, and this pained me a great deal. But I had already become certain that written in this book were the utterances of the Holy Spirit, and I couldn’t not read it. My husband and my son did not share the same view, however, and so a conflict of belief erupted in our family …

When Returning to China to Visit My Relatives, I Obtained the Words Spoken by the Holy Spirit to the Churches

It all started when I went back to China to visit my relatives. When I traveled back from Spain to see my relatives, my sister-in-law preached God’s work of the last days to me and she gave me two books. One was a book of God’s words expressed in the last days, The Scroll Opened by the Lamb, and the other was Questions and Answers on the Testimony of the Kingdom Gospel.

After I got back to Spain, my husband, my son and I continued to manage a bar, which was usually very busy, but I would read God’s words whenever I had time. I saw that God’s words not only revealed the inner details of all the work God had done since He created the world, but I also saw that they exposed the corrupt dispositions within us, such as our arrogance and selfishness, as well as the misconceptions and imaginings we harbor about God. At the same time, God’s words show us the way to cast off sin and attain salvation in our belief in God. I felt that these words had come from God, and that only God could possibly speak words of such authority and power. I felt like I’d found something very precious and I began to thirst for God’s words more and more. Whenever I had the time, I would open my book of God’s words and begin to read, and I never wanted to put it down. After some time had gone by, I gradually came to understand that Almighty God had appeared and was performing His work in the last days in the image of the “Son of man,” doing His work to judge and purify man. This fulfilled the prophecies in the Bible: “For as the lightning comes out of the east, and shines even to the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be” (Mat 24:27). “Therefore be you also ready: for in such an hour as you think not the Son of man comes” (Mat 24:44). “For the Father judges no man, but has committed all judgment to the Son” (Jhn 5:22). I became certain that Almighty God was indeed the Lord Jesus returned. Having believed in the Lord for over 10 years, I had always looked for the Lord’s return. Now that I was finally welcoming the return of the Lord Jesus, I felt both excited and joyful, and I felt so very blessed.

How to Approach the Bible in a Way That Conformed to God’s Will

One day, I was in the bar reading my book of God’s words and, when I saw customers come in, I put the book down on the bar and went to greet them. After the customers had left, I turned around and found my son reading the book. I was very happy to see this, as I’d really wanted to bear testimony to God’s work of the last days with my son. But because I had so little understanding of the truth, I didn’t know how to explain it to him, so I thought it better if he could read and understand it himself. I cheerfully walked over to my son, but before I was able to say a word, my son looked at me with a straight face and said, “How can you read this book? This book says that the words within it are expressed by God, but how can that be? Only the words in the Bible are the words of God.”

I explained patiently to my son, saying, “The Lord Jesus has returned as Almighty God, the Christ of the last days. The book you hold in your hands contains the words expressed by God Himself in the last days, and it is ‘the words spoken to the churches by the Holy Spirit’ as prophesied in the Book of Revelation.”

When I’d finished saying this, my son really lost his temper with me, and said, “If you believe in the Lord then you have to read the Bible! So why aren’t you reading the Bible?”

My husband overheard our conversation and advised me, saying, “If you have to read something then read the Bible. The Bible is such a good book. If you don’t read it, what other books would you read?”

My son and my husband were both opposing my belief in Almighty God, and this was something I really hadn’t expected. I knew that what they were saying was wrong and I wanted to discuss it with them, but I understood so little about the truth and I wasn’t able to explain it clearly, so I walked away and busied myself with other things.

One day, during my spiritual devotions, I read in Questions and Answers on the Testimony of the Kingdom Gospel the answer to a question about why believers in Almighty God don’t read the Bible: “For many years, every brother and sister who has believed in Jesus has read the Bible, and as the years have rolled by, this conviction has become set in all their hearts—the Bible is the foundation for those who believe in God, if you believe in God then you must read the Bible, and if you don’t read the Bible, then you must not believe in God. But does this view actually conform to the truth? In actual fact, before Almighty God began His new work, people had to read the Bible, for recorded in the Bible are God’s will and requirements toward man during His two past stages of work and the two past ages of the world, as well as the prophecies concerning God’s work in the last days. If people don’t read the Bible then they will be incapable of knowing what God’s requirements of man were in the Age of Law and the Age of Grace, and will also be incapable of understanding God’s will. Therefore, before God had begun His new work in the last days, people had to read the Bible and practice in accordance with God’s requirements as recorded in the Bible. But now that the ages have changed and God has begun His new work, people are supposed to follow God’s current work, read God’s current words and practice in accordance with God’s current will and requirements. Only in this way can people follow the footsteps of the Lamb. … Almighty God says: ‘Since there is a higher way, why study that low, outdated way? Since there are newer utterances, and newer work, why live amid old historical records? The new utterances can provide for you, which proves that this is the new work; the old records can’t sate you, or satisfy your current needs, which proves that they are history, and not the work of the here and now. The highest way is the newest work, and with the new work, no matter how high the way of the past, it is still the history of people’s reflections, and no matter its value as reference, it is still the old way. Even though it is recorded in the “holy book,” the old way is history; even though there is no record of it in the “holy book,” the new way is of the here and now. This way can save you, and this way can change you, for this is the work of the Holy Spirit. … Today, you need not read the Bible, for there is nothing new in it; it is all old. The Bible is a historical book, and if you had eaten and drunk the Old Testament during the Age of Grace—if you had put into practice what was required in the time of the Old Testament during the Age of Grace—Jesus would have rejected you, and condemned you; if you had applied the Old Testament to the work of Jesus, you would have been a Pharisee. If, today, you put the Old and New Testament together to eat and drink, and practice, then the God of today will condemn you; you will have fallen behind the Holy Spirit’s work of today! If you eat the Old Testament, and eat the New Testament, then you are outside the stream of the Holy Spirit!’ If we believe in God, then we have to follow the steps of God’s work. God both performs His new work and expresses new words, and we should let go of the old words and eat, drink and enjoy God’s new words.”

After reading this answer, I came to further understand that the Bible is merely a record of the two previous stages of work God has performed. Now, we are in the Age of Kingdom and God is expressing His words of the new age and performing His work of the last days to judge and purify man. We must therefore depart from the Bible and read God’s most current words, for only by doing this can we obtain the work of the Holy Spirit. For example, after the Lord Jesus came to perform His work, those who followed Him began to listen to His sermons and practice in accordance with His words. By doing this, they were following the footsteps of the Lamb and acting in conformity with God’s will. If I stopped reading the words of Almighty God because of the interference from my husband and son, I would only lose my chance to attain salvation. No matter what, I just couldn’t give up on reading the words of Almighty God, and I couldn’t give up on following Almighty God.

What Lay Behind My Family Trying to Stop Me From Reading God’s Words

One day, I couldn’t find my book of God’s words. I looked everywhere in the house but still couldn’t find it, and then I realized that my husband and my son had taken it. Later, I asked my husband for the book, but he said angrily to me, “You’re not to read that book. I’ve stored it away, and if you look at it again you’ll have to leave this house.” Seeing my husband take such an unyielding attitude, I didn’t dare ask him for it again. Before too long, the only book of God’s words I’d kept hidden was discovered by my son, who resolutely refused to let me read it and lost his temper. After my husband found out, he scolded me for not telling him about it, and in exasperation he took my only remaining book of God’s words away. Thinking about how I’d spent most of my life taking care of this family and how, now in my later years, I was at last welcoming the return of the Lord, just wanting to follow God in earnest and yet was being obstructed again and again by those closest to me, I felt so very pained and I cried all that night.

Later on, I asked my husband again for my books of God’s words, but he still wouldn’t budge an inch. Without God’s words to read, my heart felt like it had been hollowed out and was empty and desolate, and I was in no mood to work. In my pain, I could only pray to God every day, hoping that my husband would return my books to me, and hoping that I would be able to make contact with the brothers and sisters here in Spain.

Thanks to God, later I called my sister-in-law in China and asked her to help me make contact with the brothers and sisters in Spain, and before long they managed to find me. Seeing a sister from the church, I felt so happy, like I was seeing a family member. I told her about how my husband and son had been obstructing my belief in God, and she read to me two passages of God’s words: “In every step of work that God does within people, externally it appears to be interactions between people, as if born of human arrangements, or from human interference. But behind the scenes, every step of work, and everything that happens, is a wager made by Satan before God, and requires people to stand firm in their testimony to God. Take when Job was tried, for example: Behind the scenes, Satan was making a bet with God, and what happened to Job was the deeds of men, and the interference of men. Behind every step that God does in you is Satan’s wager with God—behind it all is a battle.” “Job had suffered the ravages of Satan, yet still he did not forsake the name of Jehovah God. His wife was the first to step out and play the role of Satan that can be seen by attacking Job. The original text describes it thus: ‘Then said his wife to him, Do you still retain your integrity? curse God, and die’ (Job 2:9). These were the words spoken by Satan in the guise of man. They were an attack, and an accusation, as well as enticement, a temptation, and slander.

The sister gave me fellowship, saying, “God comes to save man, and Satan wants to do anything it can to harass us and stop us from coming before God and attaining His salvation. Although it seems from the outside with these things that are happening to you now that your husband and son are not allowing you to believe in God, there is in fact a spiritual battle going on behind the scenes. Satan is taking up a wager with God to see whether or not you can continue to faithfully follow God against the obstruction of your family. It’s like when temptation befell Job, and his wife played the role of Satan to attack, seduce and tempt Job with the purpose of stopping him from worshiping God. Your husband and your son are not letting you read these books, and in doing so they also are playing the role of Satan. By means of these obstructions, Satan wants you to lose the supply of God’s words, to gradually whittle away your faith, to make you shun God and finally lose your chance to be saved. We must have a thorough understanding of the battle in the spirit world and see through Satan’s cunning schemes. We must also have faith in God, and no matter what kind of adverse situation we find ourselves in, we must always stand witness and satisfy God, for this is how Satan is shamed.”

The sister’s fellowship enabled me to understand that behind my family’s attempts to obstruct my belief in God, a battle was raging in the spirit world to see whether or not I would be able to hold onto my faith in God, not be constrained by my husband and my son, and continue to follow God. Coming to this realization, I silently made a resolution: “I must see through Satan’s cunning schemes and stand witness for God.” The sister then gave me a book of God’s words. I was overjoyed to have a book of God’s words to read again, and my heart was filled with gratitude to God.

My Book of God’s Words Was Confiscated Again—What I Was to Do

Once, after a meeting with the sister, I forgot to hide my book. Little did I realize that, upon discovering my book, my husband would once again take it away. Thinking of the last time my book of God’s words that had been given to me by my sister-in-law had been taken away by my husband and not returned, I was afraid this time that my husband would still not give it back. My heart was in such pain at that time, and I walked alone beside a lake near to our house, and I wept in silence. Later, I thought of God’s words: “Know I am Almighty God ruling all things in the universe! For Me there are no problems that cannot be resolved, much less is there anything that cannot be accomplished or any word that cannot be said.” I prayed to God: “O Almighty God! My book of God’s words has again been taken away by my husband. Without Your words to read, my spiritual life will wither away. O God! How can I get my book back? I ask that You help me and give me wisdom.” After praying, my heart felt a little more tranquil.

After I got back home, I said very calmly to my husband, “I was in a rush yesterday, so I guess you were helping me by putting away that book that was left next door?” My husband looked at me and said, “It’s in the basket inside.” I was rather dubious, but when I went to see, my book of God’s words was really there and I was so happy I just kept thanking God in my heart. Before, I had cried asking my husband for my book back, and not only had he not given it back but he had also tried to prevent me from believing in Almighty God. Now, all I had to do was say a few words and he had given it back—this really was God’s deed. After this experience, my faith in God increased, and I was no longer afraid of my son or my husband trying to stop me from believing in God. I usually hid my book away, and I read it when I could, and attended meetings when I could. But when I started practicing by relying on God, my son and husband no longer obstructed my belief in God. This allowed me to see God’s wondrous deeds—God truly is a help to me at all times.

Conclusion: Yixin’s experiences allow us to see the authority and power of God’s words. It was God’s words that led her to overcome her family’s interference and to stand witness for God—God’s words are indeed the light that guides our way. Just as what Psalms 119:105 says: “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.” The Lord Jesus said: “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (Jhn 14:6). Thank God! Amen!
