Discernment Between the True Christ and False Ones

Liu Yong

One may ask: In the Bible, we saw the Lord Jesus say, “Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many” (Matthew 24:4-5). “Then if any man shall say to you, See, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; so that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before. Why if they shall say to you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. For as the lightning comes out of the east, and shines even to the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be” (Matthew 24:23-27). The Lord Jesus clearly tells us that false Christs will appear in the last days to deceive man. We believe that we won’t be deceived as long as we hold on to the name of the Lord Jesus. We won’t accept any news preaching the Lord has returned unless He is called the Lord Jesus. Because false Christs will come in the name of the Lord, saying they are here or there and displaying signs to deceive many people. So, we believe this is the right implementation. Since Almighty God is the return of the Lord Jesus as you said, would you please fellowship about how to discern the true Christ from false ones in order not to be deceived?

no life vs the truth, the way and the life

The answers are as follows:

If we want to discern the true Christ from false ones today, we should first do according to the prophecy of the Lord Jesus. The Lord Jesus reveals three obvious characteristics of false Christs deceiving people. Let’s discern according to them in the following:

First, the Lord Jesus says, “Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many” (Matthew 24:4-5).

All those who believe in the Lord think: As long as we cleave to the name of the Lord Jesus, we will not be deceived by false Christs, for the Lord Jesus will still be called by the same name when He returns. If not, He is false. Is this viewpoint right? Now let’s carefully analyze the real meaning of the verse that the Lord Jesus says. He says, “For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.” Here the Lord obviously points out that false Christs will come in His name, which means the true Christ will not be called by Jesus when He returns. Thus, the Lord Jesus has given us an information that He will not call Himself His original name when coming back, for only false Christs in the last days will claim to be the Lord Jesus Christ. So, in the last days, those who call themselves Christ, yet are not born witness by the Holy Spirit and are incapable of doing the work of God Himself, are frauds in accordance with the prophecy of the Lord Jesus. But many people say that they only acknowledge the name of the Lord Jesus, and anyone not called by the Lord Jesus will be regarded as false Christs. If people cling to this point of view, it proves that most people do not understand the prophecy the Lord Jesus says, neither will they know its real meaning. Consequently, they will be deceived by false Christs and never will they see the appearance of the true Christ. That is because they deny this characteristic of false Christs the Lord Jesus prophesies. However, the Lord Jesus will never deny or overturn his own prophecy. Therefore, the Lord Jesus demands that His chosen people in the last days should guard against false Christs, one of whose obvious characteristics is to assume the name of the Lord.

Next, let us look at how Almighty God discloses the truth in this aspect.

Almighty God says, “In each age, God does new work and is called by a new name; how could He do the same work in different ages? How could He cling to the old? The name of Jesus was taken for the work of redemption, so would He still be called by the same name when He returns in the last days? Would He still do the work of redemption? Why is it that Jehovah and Jesus are one, yet They are called by different names in different ages? Is it not because Their work in these ages is different? Could a single name represent God in His entirety? In this way, God must be called by a different name in a different age, must use the name to change the age and represent the age, for no one name can fully represent God Himself. And each name can only represent God’s disposition during a certain age and needs only to represent His work. Therefore, God can choose whatever name befits His disposition to represent the entire age. Regardless of whether it is the age of Jehovah, or the age of Jesus, each age is represented by a name. After the Age of Grace, the final age has arrived and Jesus has already come. How could He still be called Jesus? … Did you not know that God is always new and never old?” (“The Vision of God’s Work (3)” in The Word Appears in the Flesh). “And so, when the final age—the age of the last days—arrives, My name shall change again. I shall not be called Jehovah, or Jesus, much less the Messiah, but shall be called the powerful Almighty God Himself, and under this name I shall bring the entire age to an end. I was once known as Jehovah. I was also called the Messiah, and people once called Me Jesus the Savior because they loved and respected Me. But today I am not the Jehovah or Jesus that people knew in times past—I am the God who has returned in the last days, the God who shall bring the age to an end. I am the God Himself that rises up at the ends of the earth, replete with My entire disposition, and full of authority, honor and glory” (“The Savior Has Already Returned Upon a ‘White Cloud’” in The Word Appears in the Flesh).

From the words of Almighty God, we see that God changes His name in each age and each name holds representative significance: Each name represents one age and God’s new name represents the coming of a new age; each name represents the conclusion of the old work and the beginning of a new one; each name represents the expression of part of God’s disposition. Therefore, since Christ of the last days returns, He will surely bring a new age, a new work and the expression of His disposition. Of course, His new name will be brought as well. God is no longer the kind and merciful Lord Jesus who redeems man in the Age of Grace, but the righteous and majestic Almighty God who judges man in the last days. He, being full of authority and glory, will conclude the entire age with this name. This is unquestionable, for Revelation prophesies the mystery many times, “And I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from my God: and I will write on him my new name” (Revelation 3:12). “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, said the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty” (Revelation 1:8). “And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunder, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigns” (Revelation 19:6).

From these prophecies in Revelation, we can see that when the Lord Jesus returns, He will take a new name and certainly not be called by the original one, but called by “the Almighty” in the prophecies. Actually, the name of “the Almighty” is mentioned more than 52 times in the sixty-six books of the whole Bible. As a true believer in God, how should we investigate the mystery contained within it? As to the return of Jesus Christ, all those who cling to the name of the Lord Jesus will do so in vain. Considering that God’s work is so almighty and wise, among the creatures of God, who can be His strategist? God’s wisdom is always exercised based on Satan’s scheming, which will not be conceived by false Christs absolutely. Therefore, as for this prophecy said by the Lord Jesus, only by accepting the new name of Almighty God will we not be deceived by false Christs or false prophets.

Let’s turn to the second characteristic of the false Christs prophesied by the Lord Jesus.

Second, the Lord Jesus says, “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; so that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect” (Matthew 24:24).

About the verse the Lord Jesus says, all the Lord’s believers think: False Christs will show signs and wonders to deceive man, so we dare not listen to any news preaching the Lord has returned. Just think: Is this view right? Since the Lord Jesus says He will come, He will surely come. But His arrival will be accompanied by false Christs. This is just like the relationship between authentic money and counterfeit money, by which man will be deceived. Since Christ of the last days, Almighty God, started to speak and work in the China mainland, various false Christs, who pretend to be the returned Lord Jesus, have emerged in varied places. They heal, drive out demons and show a few small miracles to deceive man. However, they cannot imitate the Lord Jesus to show the great miracles, such as raising the dead, calming the wind and waves, feeding 5000 people with five loaves and two fish, and so on. False Christs can only follow on the heels of God and imitate the work that God has done, while Christ does the work of concluding the old age and starting a new one, the new work God has never done before. Take, for example, the Jesus Christ who came to conclude the Age of Law and usher in the Age of Grace, doing the work of redemption upon the work of the Age of Law. Christ in the last days, Almighty God has come and done the work of judging and purifying man with His word in the Age of Kingdom, which is built upon the foundation of the Lord Jesus’ redemptive work. False Christs are incapable of doing God’s work like those. Therefore, in the last days, those who claim themselves to be Christ but cannot usher in a new age and conclude the old, only copying what the Lord Jesus did or relying on signs and miracles to deceive man, turn out to be false Christs with certainty. This is unquestionably true.

From this, we see that the returned Lord Jesus will not repeat the work of performing wonders, healing the sick and casting out demons that He has done, because God does not do insignificant work and God never repeats His work. If God still displays great signs and wonders as He returns, then it will be of no significance that the Lord Jesus prophesies this characteristic of false Christs of the last days. Can God’s work be contradictory? Can God interrupt His prophecy? What’s the work of the true Christ?

Next, let’s see what Almighty God says about it. Almighty God says, “In the conceptions of man, God must always display signs and wonders, must always heal and cast out demons, and must always be just like Jesus, yet this time God is not like that at all. If, during the last days, God still displayed signs and wonders, and still cast out demons and healed—if He did exactly the same as Jesus—then God would be repeating the same work, and the work of Jesus would have no significance or value. Thus, God carries out one stage of work in every age. Once each stage of His work has been completed, it is soon imitated by evil spirits, and after Satan begins to follow on the heels of God, God changes to a different method; once God has completed a stage of His work, it is imitated by evil spirits. You must be clear about these things.” “The God of today does not display signs and wonders, nor does He heal and cast out demons. When Jesus came, the work He did represented one part of God, but this time God has come to do the stage of work that is due, for God does not repeat the same work; He is the God that is always new and never old, and so all that you see today is the words and work of the practical God” (“Knowing God’s Work Today” in The Word Appears in the Flesh).

From the words of Almighty God, we can see that Christ of the last days, Almighty God, doesn’t come to perform signs and wonders, but to do the work of word and fulfill the fact of “the Word appearing in the flesh.” He does not repeat the work of the Age of Grace, but expresses the word to judge, purify, and perfect man. However, false Christs are the exact opposite. They have no truth, nor can they express the truth. Thus, they deceive man only by imitating the work Christ did in the past and performing some simple signs and wonders. Therefore, entrapping and deceiving people by the means of signs and wonders in the last days is the manifestation of false Christs and false prophets. We need to see this clearly.
